The top 5 most timeless Christmas themes and colour palettes | Christmas themes and colours | 2023

From citrus extravaganza’s to soft sages, there is a theme for everyone. Read below to find what foods, tunes and outfits suit each theme and go into this Christmas with your home and look sorted!

Which theme suits you best?

1. Candy Land Pink Christmas Theme

Bam bam backdrops Christmas theme and colour palettes - candy cane pink and red Christmas

Colours: pink, red, white - pops of yellow but minimal on the green

Foods: pomegranate salads, strawberry topped mini pavlovas, champagne (garnish with candy canes), macaroons, charcuterie boards with truffle salami & smoked salmon

Sounds Like:

Christmas in L.A - Vulfpeck (bop)

Flowers in your hair - The lumineers

Christmas tree farm - Taylor Swift

Outfit Ideas: a red checkered dress with pink pumps or converse - Or! A red sweater or shirt, white pants/skirt, and paired with pink accessories (hair accessories are a must!)

Thoughts: This is a go to theme for the fun single gals who will be entertaining this Christmas or mums with either grown-up kids or very small babies - particularly cute for baby girls that can dress up in pink too :’). The vibe is fun candy-land chill Christmas and is perfect for those celebrating Christmas in Australia where the warm summers call for cute pink cocktails and summer dresses. I’m keeping it on the down-low but this may be my chosen theme this year!

2. Soft Sage Magic Christmas Theme

Bam bam backdrops Christmas theme and colour palettes - sage Christmas - sage Christmas theme 2024 2023 Christmas decor musts

Colours: sage (incase I didn't mention it), gold, warm yellow (candles/lights), pops of salmon pink (fig red), minimal on traditional green’s and deep red’s, linen textures

Foods: pears, figs, sage (cocktails/garnishing), white fish, traditional Christmas hams, roast lamb with garlic and rosemary.

Sounds like:

Carol of the bells (arr. piano) - Stephan Moccio

Christmas at Hogwarts - John Williams

Little things - Adrian Berenguer

Outfit Ideas: green linen pyjamas (all day, really) or a long linen dress with brown sandals and brown accessories (comfy vibe)

Thoughts: To get the sage tree look, spray it with faux snow and keep all decor to gold/brown and yellow tones. I’d also recommend getting real eucalyptus leaves (if you’re in Australia, and faux if it’s not accessible) and decorating both your tree and Christmas table with it. The smell is so lovely, and eucalyptus gives a muted green vibe perfect for this theme. Make sure all your fairy lights are on the warm yellow setting and voila! Soft Sage Christmas magic.

3. Merry Mayhem Maximalist Christmas Theme

Christmas theme and colour palette 2024 / 2023 Christmas decor and themes for home / trendy Christmas ideas

Colours: traditional green base decorated with any colour decor you want! Make it bright and playful (if you’re up for it - let the kids do whatever they want decor wise)

Foods: Go for a champagne breakfast and an afternoon assortment of eclectic cheese platters with grapes, jelly, pâté, Christmas ham, blue cheeses, canapés, dessert wines and champagne.

Sounds like:

Pain - pinkpantheress

Prada Acoustic Version - Cassö (love)

Sleepyhead - Passion Pit (essential bop)

Outfit Ideas: a mix-and-match of the brightest pieces you own. Pulled back hair. Barefoot for all the dancing you’ll be doing

Thoughts: This is a great theme for those who like a tipsy Christmas (or maybe it’s been one of those years). Not for the faint of heart - for the mum of teens who is seriously done with the perfectionism of Christmas *and life*. Mum’s who are fine with their home appearing like an art museum for the holidays, who are fun and just don’t give a f*ck anymore. This is the theme to go for if you’re down for a few wines before the Christmas cooking begins.

4. Chic & Classy Christmas Theme

Christmas theme and colour palette 2024 / 2023 Christmas decor and themes for home / trendy Christmas ideas

Colours: Deep cherry red and traditional Christmas green’s with white and gold accessories

Foods: Big entertainers Christmas lunch or dinner; think roast turkey and cranberry, brie cheese pull-aparts, chocolate treats, prawns & crab meat sides, pear & rocket salads. Champagne flutes, Moët & Chandon. Edible gold lustre.

Sounds Like:

The Christmas Song - Nat King Cole

Have yourself a merry little Christmas - Frank Sinatra

Do not disturb - Hillelerlbaum

Outfit Ideas: An elegant red dress, with black accessories, red bow in hair (looks stunning with a blow out), red lipstick, black pumps

Thoughts: This is probably the least likely for those with kids, and suits singles or professional couples who might be having a Christmas between themselves or with friends. This type of Christmas is best prepared the day before, and exudes calm energy and “bed early” vibes. It’s probably more suited to those who live inner-city and like their Christmas to be relaxed and simple but elegant and effortless.

5. Citrus Cheer Christmas Theme

Christmas theme and colour palette 2024 / 2023 Christmas decor and themes for home / trendy Christmas ideas

Colours: orange, yellow, burnt orange, forest green, pomegranate red, lime green, rustic tones, off-white

Foods: mulled/spiced wines and beverages, glazed cherries, honey-glazed Christmas ham, roast potatoes, citrus sauces, cinnamon-y vibe foods, roast lamb and garlic/rosemary, wholesome meal (less emphasis on platters/canapes/cheese boards etc).

Sounds Like:

White winter hymnal - Fleet foxes (a very wholesome Christmas bop)

Can’t complain - JPL (love)

Real love baby - Father john misty

Outfit Ideas: This is really location dependant - but if I were in the cold (I wish), I’d go for my comfiest big bomber jacket, flared lounge pants, simple tee and maybe a red accessory to bring some Christmas vibes. Here in Aus, I’d wear a simple summer dress and accessorise with orange yellow tones.

Thoughts: This theme is perfect for parents with kids of any age as there is a lot of arts and crafts that need to be done. The citrus fruits can all be oven-dried (lots of tutorials online) and then they can be used for so many decorative pieces - think tree decor, wreaths, hanging pieces, garnishes, gift decor etc. It’s a fun process drying and decorating with all these citrus fruits! So have fun with it. This theme is very hyggelig, cozy and wholesome and is great for Christmas’ where the whole family will be together.
